Smashbox has announced the return of its original O-Gloss, the pH-reactive lip product that gained cult status in the 2000s and later became a highly sought-after item on eBay, selling for hundreds of dollars. The gloss will launch on September 27 as part of a five-product collection, marking its first revival since being discontinued.

The product’s comeback leverages nostalgia while maintaining authenticity. The original O-Gloss ($26) was discontinued years ago, with vintage tubes now commanding premium prices online. Its unique selling point was the surprise effect: a clear gloss that reacted to individual skin chemistry, transforming into a personalized pink shade—a departure from the predictable hues of traditional lip colors.

Lori Taylor Davis, Smashbox’s global pro lead artist, remembers the initial reaction when the product debuted.

The updated version retains the pH-reactive technology but includes modern enhancements: six-hour high-shine wear, a non-sticky finish, and added hydration from vitamins C and E. It also provides visible plumping, addressing a key limitation of the original formula.

This relaunch reflects broader industry trends toward customization. Alongside O-Gloss, Smashbox introduces O-Noir pH Cheek + Lip Tint ($25), which starts as black before shifting into a berry shade based on skin chemistry. The O-Noir pH Gel Lip Liner ($22) delivers a similar effect in a sculpting formula.

The collection also features two additional products. Full Fill-ter Smoothing Lip Glass Balm ($25) offers eight hours of hydration and a glassy finish across six nude shades, while Studio Extreme Longwear Lip Liner ($25) ensures 16 hours of wear with a creamy, transfer-resistant formula. Both eliminate the need for sharpening.

By blending heritage with innovation, Smashbox aims to appeal to longtime fans and new customers alike. Michelle Shigemasa, the brand’s global general manager, highlighted that the return of O-Gloss serves as a bridge between past and present. For collectors, the revival eliminates the need for eBay purchases, while others can now experience the product’s original appeal directly.

The September launch shows the brand’s commitment to both nostalgia and forward-thinking development.
