Unions warn over Marionnaud’s vague recovery plan
French cosmetics retailer Marionnaud is embroiled in a labor dispute after its unions announced a strike and store closures this weekend. The action follows demands for stronger job protections and clearer working conditions before a planned sale to a Hong Kong-based group.
The intersyndicale, representing the CGT, UNSA, CFDT, and CFE-CGC, released a statement Saturday instructing employees not to open stores. This move came after CK Hutchison revealed in July it was negotiating to acquire the company from its majority shareholder, David Konckier, who also owns the Bogart perfume and cosmetics brand.
Unions claim the sale agreement lacks firm commitments on employment security or benefits. With approximately 2,400 workers across France, they are organizing the strike to demand written guarantees on job retention, store closures, and severance packages. “The message is clear: do not open, close the shutters, and make our discontent known,” the unions declared in their statement.
Specific concerns include the planned shutdown of 14 of 20 stores in Lyon and three of five locations in Toulouse. Other cities, such as Paris, Marseille, Limoges, Fécamp, Nancy, and Auxerre, will see partial closures—some operating for only one to two hours due to staffing costs. A worker in Limoges confirmed their store would close Saturday afternoon.
Beyond store closures, unions highlight broader issues. The new owner has indicated that severance payments in the event of layoffs would meet only the legal minimum. A performance bonus tied to sales targets—sometimes equivalent to a 14th-month salary—has been suspended since June. “Workers are more than just a cost to be adjusted,” said Myriam Dequéant, a representative from the UNSA. She noted that the buyer’s past decisions, such as price reductions and fewer beauty services, have already weakened customer loyalty.
Workforce demographics and financial stakes
Marionnaud operates 377 stores in France and employs 2,400 people, with 98% of staff in shops being women. Last year, the company reported €536 million in sales in France, while its European network includes 700 stores in Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, Romania, and Switzerland. An extraordinary meeting of the CSE (social and economic committee) is scheduled for Monday, though Dequéant described the outlook as “very reserved.”
In July, CK Hutchison confirmed it was consulting with employees as part of the acquisition process. The company did not respond to requests for comment Saturday.
The unions’ position reflects broader challenges in retail acquisitions, where workers often face uncertainty during ownership changes. Previous deals in the sector have shown that vague assurances on jobs can lead to deeper cuts later, particularly when buyers focus on short-term savings over long-term stability.
Strike tests unions’ leverage before sale
For now, the strike and closures serve as a test of influence. Unions will push for enforceable commitments before any transition begins, but without formal agreements, the risk of further layoffs or reduced services remains significant.
An extraordinary session of the CSE will take place Monday to discuss the situation. The meeting follows weeks of negotiations between unions and the buyer, though no breakthrough has been announced.
Workers in Limoges reported their store would close Saturday afternoon, marking the first day of the strike. The action affects multiple regions, including Lyon, Toulouse, Paris, and Marseille, where partial closures are in effect.
Dequéant emphasized that the buyer’s past decisions, such as price cuts and reduced beauty services, have already eroded customer trust. She warned that further cost-cutting measures could accelerate this decline.
The CSE meeting will address concerns about severance terms, store closures, and the future of employee benefits. Unions have stated they will not accept minimal legal requirements for severance payments.
