Five Beauty Trends That Marked Summer 2026

The fragrance industry continues to shine, with growth driven by high-end scents and experiential retail events. Estée Lauder Companies’ fragrances recorded a 10% organic growth in the fourth quarter, boosted by brands like Le Labo and Tom Ford, contributing significantly to the group’s overall 3% organic sales growth. At Ulta Beauty, high-end fragrances played a central role in the first half’s sales trends. Despite challenges, Interparfums SA anticipates a decline in 2026 due to unfavorable currency exchange rates and weak performance in Europe and Asia, while its parent company, Interparfums Inc., showed resilience with a 2% sales increase in the first half of the year. The fragrance sector remains a key area for innovation and premiumization, as seen in recent launches from Estée Lauder, Chanel, and niche brands like Ex Nihilo and BornToStandOut. Events like ScentFest SF in San Francisco illustrate consumers’ appetite for a more experiential and community-oriented perfumery.

The beauty market overall saw mixed results in the premium segment. Ulta Beauty’s sales grew by 8.9% in the second quarter, driven by makeup and high-end fragrance sales, while Douglas struggled with a 2% decline. Ulta Beauty notes that nearly half of its sales now come from exclusive brands and products, highlighting the importance of differentiation, desirability, and social media conversion in the competitive premium beauty space. Douglas, on the other hand, faces challenges in Germany, France, and the Netherlands due to cautious consumption and increased promotional competition. To counter this, Douglas is reinforcing its e-commerce investments and reorganizing its store network, despite a less favorable market outlook than initially anticipated.

After years of rapid expansion, several beauty giants are now focusing on streamlining their operations. Coty, after a 5% sales decrease in the 2025/2026 fiscal year, plans to concentrate on its strategic brands and strengthen consumer engagement. The anticipated early sale of the Gucci Beauty license to Kering and L’Oréal accelerates Coty’s strategic restructuring. Avon continues to reorganize its American and international activities under a unified governance. Natura, managing Avon in America, is still seeking a long-term growth strategy. In the fragrance industry, Symrise is acquiring Floral Concept, a French specialist in natural ingredients, to strengthen its market position and integrate Floral Concept’s know-how with that of its Lautier 1795 subsidiary.
